Book Description:

A husband’s secret life, a wife’s new beginning: escape to the Caribbean with #1 New York Timesbestselling author Elin Hilderbrand.

Irene Steele shares her idyllic life in a beautiful Iowa City Victorian house with a husband who loves her to sky-writing, sentimental extremes. But as she rings in the new year one cold and snowy night, everything she thought she knew falls to pieces with a shocking phone call: her beloved husband, away on business, has been killed in a helicopter crash. Before Irene can even process the news, she must first confront the perplexing details of her husband’s death on the distant Caribbean island of St. John.

After Irene and her sons arrive at this faraway paradise, they make yet another shocking discovery: her husband had been living a secret life. As Irene untangles a web of intrigue and deceit, and as she and her sons find themselves drawn into the vibrant island culture, they have to face the truth about their family, and about their own futures.

Rich with the lush beauty of the tropics and the drama, romance, and intrigue only Elin Hilderbrand can deliver, Winter in Paradise is a truly transporting novel, and the exciting start to a new series.

Thoughts:

It would have been really great if I knew this was part of a three part series and not a two part when I started this book. But, that didn’t stop me from reading it and (of course) enjoying it! Knowing this was the first book of a series book, I thought it laid the foundation for what is to come after this one, while also providing a level of romance and suspense that kept me entertained throughout this novel. I mean, who doesn’t want to read about a mysterious death on a tropical island, a secret life discovered, with a little bit of romance?!

I really enjoy the way the characters are written and their back stories. I always find her characters both relatable and believable. I enjoyed the mysterious life that Russ was leading with the little bits of information you start to get in this book. You know going in that not too much is going to be revealed, so I wasn’t disappointed to not have too many answers around this storyline.

All-in-all, I enjoyed this book but was glad to know I had the Return to Paradise lined up to read next to keep the story going. Even though there is a level of mystery around Russ and Rosie, it has the same light-hearted and romantic feel Elin Hilderbrand is known to provide. I love following the relationships that start to form in this book and can’t wait to see where they go.
