Book Description:
They were eleven when they sent a killer to prison. They were heroes . . . but they were liars.
Kate Alice Marshall's What Lies in the Woods is a thrilling novel about friendship, secrets, betrayal, and lies - and having the courage to face the past.
Naomi Shaw used to believe in magic. Twenty-two years ago, she and her two best friends, Cassidy and Olivia, spent the summer roaming the woods, imagining a world of ceremony and wonder. They called it the Goddess Game. The summer ended suddenly when Naomi was attacked. Miraculously, she survived her seventeen stab wounds and lived to identify the man who had hurt her. The girls’ testimony put away a serial killer, wanted for murdering six women. They were heroes.
Thoughts:
I love when I feel the rush of needing to turn the next page. I, also, love when I am surprised, and cannot predict how a book is going to end. If you’re like me, then this book is for you! While they were a few things that were slightly unbelievable, I love when the twists keep coming right up until the very end! This had me on the edge of my seat, questioning who to trust and what to believe, while also fearing for Naomi.
Favorite Quotes:
🌳 “A man died in prison because of my testimony. It’s a lot to put on a child. I know he was a horrible person. If anyone deserves it, he did. But it happened because of me, and that’s more power than I ever wanted to have. It shouldn’t have been up to me.” (pg 51)
🌳 A righteous lie was still a lie. A wicked life was still a life. (pg 82)
🌳 "Bad things happened to you. It doesn't mean you deserved them. You have earned the right to protect yourself. You don't owe the world anything..." (pg 83)
🌳 “You need to decide if you’re trying to find out what really happened, or if you’re trying to prove you didn’t do anything wrong.” (pg 142)
🌳 Sometimes, surrender was the kindest thing of all. (pg 191)
🌳 Danger and pain had felt easier than safety. (pg 251)
🌳 “That’s the thing about trust, isn’t it? … You gather all the evidence you can, use your brain, weigh character and past actions. But the final inch of it – that’s faith. Trust means believing in someone. It’s not just a conclusion. It’s a choice.” (pg 318)
