Thoughts: Oh my goodness! This book had my head spinning at so many different times. I was getting frustrated with the narrator, and then suddenly, everything came together and I was blown away by the twist. It’s been awhile since I’ve read a book that surprises me, but this book did just that!

The way the Sinclair Family is described in this book left me hating them as much as the children did, but I thought Lockhart did a great job making the reader dislike everyone’s behavior, while also providing context and sympathy for how the family ended up as out of touch as they were. I loved the bond the cousins had, and found their relationship relatable.

Overall, there were times I was so confused I almost wanted to stop reading it, but then The Truth comes out, everything makes sense, and your heart falls to pieces. Great read to start the new year with!

Favorite quotes: Don’t cause distress, she said. Don’t remind people of loss. “ […] Silence is a protective coating over pain.” (Pg 32)

If you want to live where people are not afraid of mice, you must give up living in places (pg 117).
