Book Description:
On a beautiful summer night in a charming English suburb, a young woman and her boyfriend disappear after partying at the massive country estate of a new college friend.
One year later, a writer moves into a cottage on the edge of the woods that border the same estate. Known locally as the Dark Place, the dense forest is the writer’s favorite area for long walks and it’s on one such walk that she stumbles upon a mysterious note that simply reads, “DIG HERE.”
Could this be a clue towards what has happened to the missing young couple? And what exactly is buried in this haunted ground?
With her signature “rich, dark, and intricately twisted” (Ruth Ware, New York Times bestselling author) prose, Lisa Jewell has crafted a dazzling work of suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final page.
Thoughts:
Looking for a good suspense book for the fall, this book should be on your list to read! I love the way #lisajewell lays out her novels. The alternating timelines of past and present are a major weakness of mine and immediately get me sucked in as I start to solve what happened.
In June of 2017, Tallulah and Zach go missing, leaving their son (Noah) in the care of Lula’s mom. What starts off as a (romantic?) night out, turns in to a wild after party at a friend’s house. The next morning, nobody recalls the night before and the case goes cold. A year later, someone leaves clues for a new detective novelist in town, and the case begins to gain traction.
This touches on domestic violence, independence, adolescent love, sexuality, lies, power, friendship, family, determination and freedom. I really enjoyed the buildup to the night they disappeared and definitely think this should be on your fall must reads list. The only thing was that at the end, some of the timeline didn’t line up for me, but other than that, I really enjoyed this novel!
