The Giver, the 1994 Newbery Medal winner, has become one of the most influential novels of our time. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. Lois Lowry has written three companion novels to The Giver, including Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son.

Thoughts:

Have you ever read a book when you were younger, then read it again as an adult? I loved this book when I was younger so I read it with my daughter and loved it even more!

This struck so many thoughts and feelings as an adult. The community is both a crazy ridiculous idea, yet I can understand the mindset in wanting to limit people from experiencing pain, suffering, differences, yet I am such of lover of what makes everyone unique and different. As Jonas states, “If everything’s the same, then there aren’t any choices! I want to wake up in the morning and decide things,” (pg 123). The ability to choose is something often taken for granted. Through this ability, there is a risk of failure, but it’s through these things that you grow and learn. Yes, sometimes those experiences bring sadness, and pain, but the beauty in a life of choice is not needing to quiet those voices calling you into being who you are to be.

This is the story of Jonas growing up in a society with strict rules, no individualism, and the want to go against the norm. The more he learns about the way things used to be, the harder it is for him to continue living in a society that lacks the knowledge he possesses. I loved this book and am glad I read this again as an adult. Also, I had no idea this was one of four books?! I’ll for sure be reading the others!
