The End of Her

Genre: Mystery / Suspense / Psychological Thriller

Book Type: Physical

Author: Shari Lapena

Pages: 352

Publisher: Pamela Dorman Books (July 28, 2020)

Book Description:

A long-ago accident–and a visitor from out of the blue. . .

Stephanie and Patrick are adjusting to life with their colicky twin girls. The babies are a handful, but even as Stephanie struggles with the disorientation of sleep deprivation, there’s one thing she’s sure of: she has all she ever wanted.

Then Erica, a woman from Patrick’s past, appears and makes a disturbing accusation. Patrick had always said his first wife’s death was an accident, but now Erica claims it was murder.

Patrick insists he’s innocent, that this is nothing but a blackmail attempt. Still, Erica knows things about Patrick–things that make Stephanie begin to question her husband. Stephanie isn’t sure what, or who, to believe. As Stephanie’s trust in Patrick begins to falter, Patrick stands to lose everything. Is Patrick telling the truth–is Erica the persuasive liar Patrick says she is? Or has Stephanie made a terrible mistake?

How will it end?

Thoughts:

Woven throughout, there are other relationships with their own secrets to be discovered, but unlike her typical books, I kept waiting for that major plot twist, and never really felt that. While I liked the way it ended, I was also disappointed because I wanted more.

I’m torn on this book because the author is one of my favorites and is an automatic purchase for me, but the end of this felt rushed. Typically there is a major plot twist I didn’t see coming, and unfortunately, I thought this was more predictable than normal. Maybe I’m just getting used to her writing style??? 🤷🏼‍♀️ This was definitely full of twists, turns, suspense, betrayal, marriage and all of the typical elements of a good mystery, I’m at a loss for how I feel about this book.

I still recommend this book, but an interested in thoughts on anyone who’s read this that have read her others… Am I expecting too much?
