Book Description:

After decades of research, world-renowned Stanford University psychologist Carol S. Dweck, Ph.D., discovered a simple but groundbreaking idea: the power of mindset. In this brilliant book, she shows how success in school, work, sports, the arts, and almost every area of human endeavor can be dramatically influenced by how we think about our talents and abilities. People with a fixed mindset—those who believe that abilities are fixed—are less likely to flourish than those with a growth mindset—those who believe that abilities can be developed. Mindsetreveals how great parents, teachers, managers, and athletes can put this idea to use to foster outstanding accomplishment.

In this edition, Dweck offers new insights into her now famous and broadly embraced concept. She introduces a phenomenon she calls false growth mindset and guides people toward adopting a deeper, truer growth mindset. She also expands the mindset concept beyond the individual, applying it to the cultures of groups and organizations. With the right mindset, you can motivate those you lead, teach, and love—to transform their lives and your own.

I’ve heard such great things about this book and finally was able to listen to it – and it lived up to its hype! This was exactly the book I needed to remind me not to lose sight of where I am going, and not to be discouraged during trying times.

“In a growth mindset, challenges are exciting rather than threatening. So rather than thinking, oh, I’m going to reveal my weakness, you say, wow, here’s a chance to grow.”

Additionally, for me another strong takeaway was the section on parenting and schoolwork. Carol Dweck states, “Test scores and measures of achievement tell you where a student is, but they don’t tell you where a student could end up.” This hit me so much for all of the hard work our teachers do to encourage growth within their students. It’s something I have started to tell my kids when they stress out about one test score and remind them that what is important is the lesson learned about how to improve a grade, rather than worrying about the grade itself.

This was an excellent book and one I highly recommend if you’re struggling with all things 2020. This book reminds you not to lose focus of where you’re going, learn from what is going on, and continue to grow – no matter your age.
