Book Description:
Gerry Brooks is an elementary school principal turned YouTube celebrity who entertains K-12 teachers, administrators, and parents across the country. He tells jokes with the kind of mocking humor that gets a laugh, yet can be safely shared in school. After all, even great schools have bad days — when lesson plans fall through, disgruntled parents complain, kids throw temper tantrums because they have to use the same spoon for their applesauce and mashed potatoes, and of course, dealing with… The Horror! The Horror!…dreaded assessments. Ranging from practical topics like social media use in the classroom and parent-teacher conferences to more lighthearted sections such as “Pickup and Dropoff: An Exercise in Humanity” and “School Supplies: Yes, We Really Need All That Stuff,” Go See the Principal offers comic relief, inspiration, and advice to those who need it the most.
Thoughts:
I read this as a parent to get a bit more insight on what goes on for our teachers that I am unaware of. I loved this book and loved the use of humor to keep you interested in this book.
While teachers would benefit most from this book, I think parents would find this book eye-opening. Everything from how classes are picked (child’s personality, parent involvement, etc), why school supplies are needed, recognizing when behavior is age appropriate, taking vacations during the school year, the importance of counselors/psychologists, sports and teacher gifts (along with a number of other things) are all discussed.
I found this extremely informative and made me have even more respect for our Super Heroes (which is what I’ve referred to teachers as after this past year). The Glossary had me actually laughing out loud. The pick-up line section was extremely accurate (from this car driving mom), and I truly cannot say enough about reading this to have more respect for our teachers (ESPECIALLY RIGHT NOW)! Brooks’ use of humor and actual stories made this for a very fast read.
Whether you’re a teacher or a parent, I highly recommend this book.
