Book Description:
Called in to consult after a young woman disappears, Tracy Crosswhite has the uneasy feeling that this is no ordinary missing-persons case. When the body turns up in an abandoned well, Tracy’s suspicions are confirmed. Estranged from her family, the victim had balked at an arranged marriage and had planned to attend graduate school. But someone cut her dreams short.
Solving the mystery behind the murder isn’t Tracy’s only challenge. The detective is keeping a secret of her own: she’s pregnant. And now her biggest fear seems to be coming true when a new detective arrives to replace her. Meanwhile, Tracy’s colleague Vic Fazzio is about to take a fall after his investigation into the murder of a local community activist turns violent and leaves an invaluable witness dead.
Two careers are on the line. And when more deadly secrets emerge, jobs might not be the only things at risk.
Thoughts:
This series… Goodness – you’ll be hearing me keep talking about it because it really is that good.
This was an easy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 for me. Why not the solid 5 you ask? It’s because Close to Home was so good for me, that I wanted a little bit more in this one – but that is also me now holding this series to an incredibly high standard! Each book in this series has been unique in its case, and the biggest difference is that Tracy didn’t seem to be the lead in either case within this book, which I’ve come to enjoy. (Yes, she is still the reason there are breakthroughs in Kavita’s case, which I absolutely enjoyed!) This book had two mysteries going on:
1) Tracy was helping a friend solve a missing woman case that tackled family expectations, friendships, disappointment, secrets, culture differences, betrayal and more. I LOVE when the victim’s story is italicized, as it adds a layer of depth that @robertdugoni does incredibly well!
2) Faz gets himself in over his head while trying to track down the murder of a local activist he suspects was gunned down by a local drug dealer, the son of a man he put away years ago and holds a grudge against Faz. This storyline had my heart racing, I was scared, mad, full of suspense on multiple aspects, and provided the heart racing – page turning aspect to this book.
To make things more intense, Andrea Gonzalez has been named the new fifth wheel on the A Team, which is causing some tension and suspicion if she’s there to replace Tracy when she goes out on leave.
Ok – now that I’m writing this, it deserves to be a 5⭐️, but I LOVE the sense of family and the way the A Team operates when they’re all working together. That is 💯 just personal preference, as these storylines were great and had so much going on. The ending alone was a 5⭐️ as it was absolutely perfect, but the majority of the novel felt slightly different to me.
If you haven’t started – go start this series. The 8th book was just released today and I can’t wait to “finish” (ie: get caught up on) this series.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 – ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
