Book Description:

Whoever is born here, is doomed to stay ’til death. Whoever settles, never leaves.

Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a seventeenth century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Muzzled, she walks the streets and enters homes at will. She stands next to children’s bed for nights on end. Everybody knows that her eyes may never be opened or the consequences will be too terrible to bear.

The elders of Black Spring have virtually quarantined the town by using high-tech surveillance to prevent their curse from spreading. Frustrated with being kept in lockdown, the town’s teenagers decide to break their strict regulations and go viral with the haunting. But, in so doing, they send the town spiraling into dark, medieval practices of the distant past.

This chilling novel heralds the arrival of an exciting new voice in mainstream horror and dark fantasy.

Thoughts:

I think I would have enjoyed this more if I would have been reading different genres, but after reading some paranormal, fantasy books that pushed my mind, this one fell short for me. I was looking for spooky and suspenseful, and I couldn’t get into this one like I hoped.

The story is about a town that is haunted by a witch who’s eyes and mouth are sewn shut. This sounded right up my alley, but the problem I had was that you could touch this witch, and I didn’t find that part believable, therefore, I struggled through most of the book.

The story of the town believing the curse was interesting. They “looked like people who knew they had done something dreadful, something irreversible… and something they could easily live with.” It was interesting following the explanations the town people made for their actions. This was definitely a darker book and I think if I had read something else prior to this one I would have liked it more.
